What To Expect At A Doctors Office Visit

by Joann Dunn

If you haven't been to a doctor's office in a while, you might not know what to expect. The most important thing is that you're going, as it's vital to be proactive about your health. You should also know that most doctor visits are painless, and you probably have no reason to worry.

Check Your Height and Weight

Most doctor visits begin with getting your height and weight checked. It will give the doctor an idea of your body fat index, so they know whether or not you're at a healthy weight for your height. Obesity can lead to numerous health problems, and it's easy for them to keep an eye on it by checking your height-to-weight ratio.

Check Your Blood Pressure

The doctor or another staff member will check your blood pressure to ensure it isn't too high. High blood pressure puts you at greater risk for heart disease and strokes, so your doctor wants to ensure yours is at a healthy level.

Discuss Your Reason for Visiting

Are you seeing your doctor for a routine check-up, or do you have a sickness or other specific concern? If it's not your annual physical, your doctor will want to know why you're there so they can help you solve your problem. Depending on your reason for being there, they might run some tests, prescribe you medicine, recommend you see a specialist, etc.

Check Your Heart and Lungs

Most times you visit your doctor, they'll use a stethoscope to listen to your heartbeat and lungs. They'll place it over your heart to listen for irregularities and your torso and back while you take deep breaths to check your breathing. They want to ensure everything sounds good to rule out potential issues.

Check Your Throat

Most visits to your doctor will include checking your throat and tonsils to ensure there isn't any inflammation or other problems. Many issues can be identified by looking at your throat, such as ear infections, long-term coughs, tonsillitis, etc. They'll usually use their hands to check your neck for swollen lymph nodes, as that's a sign of many illnesses as well.

Blood and Urine Tests

Many trips to the doctor include getting lab tests done. You will either provide a urine sample, get blood drawn for a blood test, or both. Your doctor can identify many health issues through lab tests, and it's a relatively non-invasive process—and it usually only takes a day or two for the results to come in.

About Me

Pregnant? What You Need to Know About Your Pregnancy

During my first pregnancy, I spent a lot of time pushing pillows behind my back trying to find comfort. As the size of the baby grew, so did my discomfort. By the time she was born, I was more than ready to give birth. When I found out I was pregnant again, I was determined that I would not suffer through the same discomforts. I started researching ways to ease the symptoms of pregnancy, including back pain. I created this blog to help other expectant moms find remedies to deal with those symptoms that can be emotionally and physically draining.
